What a delightful way to spend a Saturday tea time! Each cast and the Directors contrived
to create a pleasingly intimate atmosphere which the otherwise unprepossessing room might
not have led an audience to expect. We were treated to three one act, simple and amusing plays all well acted and imaginatively directed.
“Camp Confidence” was great fun with an admirable Rosemary Snow as the really quite
capable group leader who may just have bitten off more than she could chew. Her assistant, Fiona, played by Wendy Prendergast, found just the right level of insecurity and naivety. The five campers were all exactly right in the interpretation of their individual characters. The stage was very neatly arranged. One can only feel sorry for Joan Pimm who, as the agoraphobic Blanche, was obliged to shelter hunched in the entrance to her tent.
In the second play, “Peas”, Joan MacGregor and Roger Deller gave us a very entertaining
time with Daisy and Gerry, no longer in the full bloom of youth, having their first meeting
courtesy of the wisdom of a dating agency. Their total incompatibility was very gently and
amusingly conveyed. The denouement being a little predictable, their exit from the stage was full of promise! The two roles were very nicely drawn.
“Carrot” brought the archetypal Trade Union representative before his boss in an attempt to resolve a problem. Rob Whatman and David Frost were convincing in portraying their differences - and yet their similarities. Their changes in attitude one to the other were very well portrayed.
In these close quarters conditions, the need for the cast to make full use of facial expressions was well recognised. All credit for this and the overall presentation is due to the
Directors and their supporting crews.
